How to share a folder in Windows XP Professional Edition?

This guide provides step-by-step instructions on Sharing your Media files from a Windows XP Professional computer to Xtreamer Media Center.

Double click on My Computer and browse to the directory you want to share.

  1. Right click the directory, and select Sharing and Security.

  2. Under Network Sharing and Security select the checkbox for Share this folder on the network, and underneath there, enter your Share name. In our example the share name will be MvixShare. When done click Apply then OK.

  3. We must now reboot the computer, and boot into Safe mode. This is the only place where we can give the Guest account specific permissions for the share. Reboot your computer now.
  4. As the computer is starting to reboot, hit F8 several times and should see the Boot options.

  5. Select Safe Mode and then select Microsoft Windows XP and wait for the computer to boot.
  6. On the logon screen log in as Administrator. You will see a popup asking you if you want to proceed in Safe mode, select Yes.
  7. Doube click on My Computer and browse to the directory where your share is located.
  8. Right click on the folder, in this example the folder is named Sharing, and select Properties, then select the Security tab.

  9. Click on Add, then under Object Name type guest, and click on Check Names. Windows should fill in the full Guest account. Click Ok which will return you to the sharing properties window. Ensure that Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, and Read are selected. The click on Apply and Ok.
  10. Now Reboot the Computer, and allow it to boot into the Normal mode.
  11. Reboot the Xtreamer player, navigate to Movies, and Refresh (using your remote) several times. (It may take several refreshes to bring up the shares).
