This is why a "Green" HDD fails a lot quicker than a standard HDD!

I had 3x 2TB WD20EARS "Green" drives in my Windows 2008R2 server which I used for my backups, media and file sharing, which runs 24x7. The drives were all bought from the same place on the same day and were running for about 2 years. One day, the server stopped functioning and then when rebooted would not boot. I removed the first drive from my server, my system drive, and connected it to my main PC using eSata and scanned the drive using the Western Digital utilities and found that the disk was riddled with bad sectors.

I did the same with the next drive, my backup drive, and again found the same problem. This left me with one drive which I could not afford to lose so I sent in the first two drives to WD as a warranty replacement (they have a 3 year warranty) and promptly received two new drives.

I then scanned the third drive and found that it was developing bad sectors, but not at the same rate as the other two. I sent in a complaint to WD announcing my dismay at the quality of their products and this is an excerpt from their reply:

Quote

On regards of the drives failing in a period of time not according to the use the customer gives, I have to share some information you will find very useful to elongate the life of the green drives. Green drives are designed to save power when not in use, therefore they go to a un-load position of the actuator when no data is being taken from the drive to then change the position of the actuator to load when new information is read/written. What does it mean? The life of the actuator is limited and the more you load/un-load the drive the shorter the life of the drive.

How to fix this situation, easy! Just go to the settings of your network enclosure or operative system and minimize the times your drive goes to sleep. So either set the sleep timer of your drive to the maximum time or put it to never go to sleep. Think of it like this: The less the drive goes to sleep mode the larger the life.

So, from what I read from their reply, a "Green" drive puts itself to sleep when it thinks the time is right. If the OS continually tells it when to sleep then the resulting continous movement of the mechanism to park the heads will ultimately kill the drive. Was anyone aware of this?

I did some more investigation into the "Green" drives and found that a lot of NAS manufacturers do not recommend the WD or Seagate "Green" drives to be used in their products- interesting! See this link as one example:

http://web.qnap.com/pro_compatibility.asp

Namely this section:

Quote

Note5 (WD Caviar Green & Seagate Green)
These hard disk drives have passed QNAP lab's initial verification of compatibility. However, because many users have reported unstable experience with these hard disk drives, we do not recommend using these had disk drives with QNAP products. WD10EADS-00P8B0 and WD15EADS-00P8B0 are not suggested because of slow performance and stability issues.

Quote

Not Recommended Hard Drives Manufacturer Model Number Size (GB) Remark Seagate ST2000DL003 (9VT1CC32) 2000 Note5 WD WD20EARS 2000 Note5 WD WD15EARS 1500 Note5 WD WD10EARS 1000 Note5 WD WD20EADS 2000 Note5 WD WD20EVDS 2 TB Note5 WD WD15EADS 1500 Note5,Note6 WD WD10EADS 1000 Note5

The general discussion area is not the place for Xtreamer product owners to ask/post bug reports and ask technical issues questions about their devices!!!
Indeed, this forum provides dedicated sub-sections for such things so please stop posting them within the general discussion area.
