Self -built Display attached to etrayz

After using the etrayz now for quite some time, we searched for new exiting possibilities.
First of all, we build a sensor for measuring air temperature, which works fine and was integrated into our homepage. Having done that, we thought about building a device for measuring air pressure. This was quite difficult, as you have to consider the temperature as well as your altitude above Sea-level. Finally this works fine and has been placed on our homepage.
One idea really fascinated us: a small display, which would show all useful information given by the etrayz. We are using an usb to serial adapter to export data from the etrayz, because we experienced good results with it for the temperature and pressure measurement. It took some time, but now our device is finished. It even gives us more than the etrayz-informations. The ertrayz fetches news from chosen websites and shows those on our display. We managed to read data from transmission and sowing them on the display too. (Thanks to vpeter for his help!).
Take a look on the video, as it gives you an impression, what´s already possible.

Features that are already supported:
• Hdd-temp
• HDD-usage
• HDD LCC
• HDD hours
• Ram-usage,
• Fan –speed,
• Download speed to a specified folder
• CPU-usage
• CPU total load
• Transmission (upload – download speed, % and the name of the torrent)
• Showing news, refreshing each 10 minutes.
• Light can be switched on and off and adjust brightness
• Everything what fits in the display can be displayed (4lines à 20charracters)

This list can be easily extended, depending on your needs.

@ Mondeo: The infos are provided by the etrayz and are transmitted via usb-serial-adapter to the display. The display contains a micro-controller which compiles the given control characters from the etrayz to usual symbols. This micro-contoller is the heart of the whole thing.

We are working on a solution with a remote control. At the moment we can change the lights on/of and different brightness.

@ arztde: The O2 joggler klooks nice, but I cannot find any for 50 Pounds. Cheapest I found, was around 80 Pounds. Compared to the price of the etrayz, this seems for me to much. But the O2 joggler has nice features... For me, as I only would like to have all information visuible, the display seems to be better (cheaper).

http://cgi.ebay.de/w...ayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 2759.l1259

Its sold out correct but i found here a price of 70 pounds in ebay uk .. you can put ubuntu to it and have with this a complete pc inside a fotoframe... including phone because with a hack you can free it for german sim and so on...

i use it with etrays as squeezeserver and player and fotoframe and so on... the price betwheen 50 -70 euros is realy fair for this little thing.

But even that is nearly the price I had payed for the etrayz and I can olny find 4!! of them at the moment on ebay.. So that doesn`t seems to be an option for a lot of people.

Of course, it looks nice and offers plenty of possibilities, but personally I don`t need it as, like said before, this rather cheap version does everything I want. I paid all in all for the material around 25 Euros... If you want a fotoframe etc, you have to choose a more expensive version, like the joggler. It depends on fields of use..

Nice stuff.
I myself monitor my etrayz using the LCD on my Logitech G15 (old Version).

It's easily done with using lcdproc. Currently i monitor the disk usage, Uptime, simple bar based cpu usage, transfer speeds and transfered data. It's possible to add different clock types and a bit more info about cpu load and stuff. But for myself, the extra cpu/system load info is irrelevant.

To make use of the G15's lcd you have to download the g15daemon (1.9.5.3), libg15 (1.2.7) libg15renderer (1.2). That will make you able to use the LCD in linux. Then you have to compile lcdproc (0.5.2) with g15 as driver.

The LCDd.conf file needs to be modified to use g15 as driver. Then you need to enter your pc's ip instead of localhost as interface to bind to. After running LCDd it's read for the lcdproc client.

On the etrayz either you compile the lcdproc yourself, or you simply install the version i provide ( unpack and run make install as root ).
It will install lcdproc on the etrayz with already the support for g15. Now the lcdproc config needs to be altered wich will be in /usr/local/etc/. Enter your pc's ip as Server and set true/false the stuff you want it to display.

When you start the g15daeom with the -s option, the MR key is to switch between the g15daemon and the LCDd. Otherwise it's the black round key to switch between them. I run it with -s since the previouse Versions of the daemon had used the MR key and i got used to it.

By default you can use 3 keys. The black round button ( haven't looked into it if it's the MR key when not running g15daemon -s ) is to make the info rotate/hold, first button of the 4 is previous screen, last is next screen. The both in the middle arent used.

You can even make "shortcuts" with lcdexec to start/stop/run commands on your etrayz. Before i had to reinstall my etrayz i had some menu entrys for the apache, torrent client, iroffer ( irc file server ) and reboot/shutdown the etrayz. The menu is accesible by pressing the G1 key. You can navigate through the menu with the 2 middle buttons of the 4. Starting is done by pressing the round black button.
